Waking to the news of Venezuela strikes by the U.S. government

I woke up (Saturday) morning to the news that our country has bombed Venezuelan soil and removed its president and his family. Without congressional approval, this has to be illegal. Can President Donald Trump really lead our country into this whole insane “Operation in Venezuela,” as the New York Times put it?

Is it only considered a war if the country we are attacking is attacking back? I am horrified and am demanding that our U.S. Congress do its job and put a stop to the illegal and immoral actions of our current president. This is not the country I grew up believing we were at least trying to be.

Janis Pilkinton, Denver

Thank God that President Donald J. Trump is the President of the United States of America! He is providing strong leadership and management of our country.

I totally agree with his administration’s actions against Venezuela, its president and his wife. Peace through strength, a motto that allows me to sleep well every night!

Your Corrections column encourages readers to send in corrections of errors in reporting or facts. I have one: The United States did not “remove” Maduro. The United States invaded a sovereign nation and kidnapped its leader.

Furthermore, what right do we have to run another country, and to tap into its oil reserves? Have we conquered Venezuela and are looting the spoils?

Granted, Nicolás Maduro is no hero. He is a cruel dictator and needs to be brought to justice, but not in the way we’ve done it.

What our U.S. president has done is blatantly illegal. He and his cohorts must be held accountable. Congress needs to stand up to him. Our president’s actions are further shredding the Constitution that he, theoretically, swore to protect and preserve.

Allyson Sawtell, Denver

We awoke Saturday to the ghastly news that the United States, in clear violation of its Constitution, had attacked a sovereign nation, seized its president and first lady, and was transporting them to New York to face criminal charges.

Imagine my surprise, disappointment, and indignation that Gov. Jared Polis immediately issued a public statement leading with the statement: “Today is a moment to celebrate the ouster of the brutal socialist dictator of Venezuela…”

A celebration of the shredding of our Constitution! Really, Gov. Polis? Does anyone else hear appeasement in the framing of this outrage? Let’s not forget how appeasement of dictators works out in history.

Antoinette Tadolini, Brighton

It is good to know that kidnapping is now legal at least if you are in the White House. Anything for oil and money. If they bring the Venezuelan president and his wife to the U.S., should ICE then deport them since they will be illegal immigrants?

Also, apparently, Venezuelan citizens were also murdered. And why did President Trump allow a mass murderer in the U.S. who has murdered thousands, many of them women and children? There is a lot of oil and other minerals in Russia, but instead, Trump bows down to the criminal Putin. Guess we will now spend trillions of dollars in Venezuela, along with the trillions of dollars in tax cuts for the rich, as well as $110,600,000 for Trump’s golf game.

No wonder Trump says we can’t afford clean water in Colorado for both republicans and democrats.
